For this months training tip, we are going to talk about how to generate power for acceleration. Power is primarily generated from the largest lower body muscle group in the body, the Glutes, otherwise more commonly referred to as your “Butt Muscles.” In order to generate power effectively, you have to activate and recruit the Glute muscles properly to maximize your performance. One of the best exercises to help “turn-on” these muscles is the bridge.

In the video above, with help from my son Will, I will take you through different progressions of the bridge. You will learn different variations of this exercise, which will help maximize your results on the field. These are great to use before the game or during warm-ups. Your muscles don’t just turn on and start working like a light switch. You have to warm them up in order to get the results you desire. By doing bridge progressions you will see your power increase, enabling you to accelerate quicker, which ultimately will help take your game to the next level.
And it’s not just our kids that can benefit from these exercises. Parents, if you would like to keep a healthy back, or if you have back problems, you may want to incorporate bridge progressions into your workout routine. Many issues stem from the Glutes not firing correctly in every day walking or climbing stairs. When the Glutes do not fire correctly the hamstrings have to do more work then they are supposed to and this causes undo stress on the back. So these exercises are good for anyone, at any age that desires a healthier back.
