Does strength training help with running?
The short answer is absolutely…depending on your training. A common misconception is lifting weights or strength training will bulk you up and cause rigidity to the point where you slow down. There is a certain stigma surrounding strength training mainly due to bodybuilding. However, bodybuilding is only a tiny part on the strength training spectrum. If you want to sprint faster, you need to do both.
Here at Parisi, speed and strength training work in tandem. If you do not train with sprints, you won’t get better at sprinting. On the flip side if you are sprinting but not strength training, your relative body strength (how strong you are for your body weight) will curtail your BEST potential sprint times. We want our BEST sprint times, right?
How can we help your athletes?
Our goal is to develop the total body with more focus on the core and lower body to enhance speed training. However, everyone is unique where strengths and deficiencies vary between individuals. When you come into our facility, we must first assess strengths and deficiencies. Once we have a clear understanding of the athlete’s area(s) of focus, we can begin to prescribe specific functions to reach our goals. We reach our goals by applying proper technique with compound movements such as deadlifts, squats, single leg exercises and other various Olympic lifts.
We can apply strength training to all ages as well. With athletes under the age of 13, we utilize body weight exercises, technique training, and medicine ball work to develop strength. Click the link below to learn more about our fundamental approach.
