There’s no better time than right now to create good home workout habits. Physical fitness is so crucial during these uncertain times. Not only in the sense of clearing your mind and getting your heart rate up, but more importantly to stay healthy to fight off this virus or any in the future. These habits can be followed by your entire family in an effort to remain strong.
1. Get in a Groove
Create a consistent workout schedule to discipline yourself. Decide whether you are a morning or a night person. Pick what time of day you feel is best for you. This could be bright and early at 6am before the work for the day starts. Don’t sabotage yourself by shutting down the idea of doing an early morning workout because you aren’t a “morning person.” You could choose to use your workout as a break in the middle of the day as an opportunity to step away from the computer. Or, you could workout when all of your work for the day is finally completed. This is all based on your personal preferences. In order to truly get yourself on a schedule, you need to exercise at the time of day that feels right to you in order to keep yourself motivated. No matter what time you pick, exercising will leave you feeling energized and ready to take on whatever comes next in your day.
2. Find Your Spot
To get the most out of your workout, find a place to sweat in your home to set up that you enjoy being in. Pick your favorite room in the house that will encourage you to grind out your home workout. It is imperative that you designate a specific space to workout in to stay on the schedule that you made. Maybe this space is quiet, one that gives you privacy to sweat all alone. Or you might prefer a larger, open space in the house where others in your family can get involved as well. It is all up to you – that is the excitement of a home workout, it is all based on only your desires. Of course, don’t forget that going outside on a beautiful spring day is also an option!
3. Get Your Blood Pumping
Be sure to go through a solid warm up before starting your workout. Stretch to increase blood flow and elevate your heart rate before you jump right into it. This is essential to avoid injuries – that would surely ruin your home workout experience! If you are feeling sore after your last workout, a longer warm up can help to reduce that pain. A proper warm up also gives you times to mentally prepare for what lies ahead, whether it be the workout or your day in its entirety. Your warmup can be short – it should be between 5 – 10 minutes.
4. Invest in Yourself and the Equipment
By all means, equipment is not necessary. There are a ton of workouts based purely on bodyweight. If you feel that you need to change it up, think about purchasing a few pieces of equipment to add some variations to your typical workouts. This could include bands, kettlebells or dumbbells. It is great to broaden your horizons with different types of workouts. This can only improve your workouts and make you stronger, so it is totally worth it. Variety in your workouts will target all of your particular muscle groups as well as increase strength overall. The use of equipment will help you get the results you are working hard to achieve.
5. Don’t Forget to Recharge
No matter how much you are working out you have to make healthy decisions about how you are fueling your body. This includes both eating habits and how hydrated you stay throughout the day. Be sure to eat before and after your workout to help your body recover. Make it a habit to constantly drink water during the day. As the day progresses your body will continue to recover, so it is key to not forget the value in keeping your body full of the right food and liquids all day. This also includes sleep. If you are sticking to a workout schedule, also stick to a sleep schedule to allow your body to get the rest it needs. Then, by the morning you are more than ready to conquer your day. Maybe you will even start to jump out of bed for your 6am workout!
6. Come One Come All
Once you are set in your routine think about adding other family members or friends to your workout circle. It is a great feeling to encourage others to be active and see how rewarding the experience is for them. This is the perfect way to bring your friends and family together, even if it’s done virtually! A bond made when sweating from a tough workout is a special type of bond. Help those you care about get on a schedule and on the road to good health. Share workout ideas and get the chance learn about others. Don’t forget to make it fun – families and friends that get fit together stay fit together!
These habits are all for the long term. Stay motivated with the ambition to live a long, happy, and healthy life. Listen to your body when it needs to rest, but also strive to challenge yourself. There is no greater feeling than reaching a goal, especially a goal that is a fitness milestone. You can accomplish more than you know at home. The results you see from creating your personal habits will be proof of your dedication the tough grind you have conquered.
